Why Marine Zippers & Snaps Fail

Marine environments are brutal on metal and plastic hardware. Three forces work against every zipper and snap on your boat:

• Corrosion. Salt and moisture oxidize metal components (even stainless steel and brass), binding moving parts together.
• Grime buildup. Dirt, sand, and environmental fallout accumulate in zipper teeth and inside snap sockets, creating friction that leads to jamming.
• UV degradation. Plastic coil zippers become brittle over time from UV exposure, making them prone to breaking under stress.

Step 1: Identify Your Zipper Type

Before applying any product, know what you're working with:

• Metal zippers (brass or stainless): Prone to corrosion. Require regular cleaning and lubrication.

Step 2: Clean the Hardware

Never apply lubricant over dirt or salt.

When to Replace vs. Repair

Regular maintenance extends hardware life, but eventually replacement is necessary:

• Repair: If a zipper is stiff or a snap is slightly corroded but still functional, cleaning and lubrication usually restores it.
• Replace: If zipper teeth are missing, the slider is broken, or a snap is seized or torn from canvas — replace. Forcing failing hardware only causes further fabric damage.

Seasonal Maintenance Schedule

• Monthly (or after heavy saltwater use): Rinse with fresh water and apply a light coat of lubricant.

Step 4: Maintain Between Applications
